Acknowledgments
Many persons—too many to list individually here—have helped me while working on the dictionary, in different ways and at different times, and I thank all of them collectively and profoundly. There are, however, two people who must be mentioned by name.
That this dictionary is a reality is largely owing to Albert Hoffstädt, senior editor for Asian Studies at Brill, who can rightly be called the prime mover of it. Albert is a cultivated gentleman at home in several languages, and it was good fortune of the highest order to have him as editor and advocate. Working with him throughout the process has been a great pleasure.
To my wife, Amy Strickland, I am more than grateful. What I owe her extends far beyond the limits of this project. Her presence and support, from first to last, means everything.
